Description
The Crowned Victoria Pigeon, the most striking of the Pigeon family is native to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Distinguished by the spectacular crest of lacy fan shaped white tipped feathers on its head, it has plumage of purple and dusky grey with a white tipped wing and striking red eyes. Due to a loss of habitat because of rainforest deforestation, this birds large size and low flying nature the Crowned Pigeon has been hunted and poached and its ststus currently ranked as vulnerable. Breeding programmes and eco tourism throughout Asia are helping with its survival. Clare Haxby is a British artist whose work is inspired by wildlife, travel and conservation. Clare lived in Asia for several years and came across this unusual bird at Jurong Bird Park in Singapore. This painting is part of the artists series of paintings inspired by Asia.
