Ascent (wall drawing)

Description

The Ascent wall drawings began after Pak-Keung Wan spent time camping and walking in Snowdonia National Park, Wales, 1994. The impulse grew out from observing the paths walked into the mountainsides. Drawn with a single continuous line and from a central position that is maintained throughout the process, each Ascent starts at the base of the wall and ends at the full height of his reach resulting in forms constrained by the physical parameters of his body. The line as a conveyor of time has played a recurring role in his drawings. Here it’s an attempt to translate a sense of geological time into the fabric of the drawings, with each layer evolving to form an imprint of an Ascent’s own history. For Wan these drawings are vestiges of a distant place, of experiences past, but those which are firmly held within his body, conveying a presence that speaks of the geological, mineral and the human. The cost is for a single Ascent drawing. My proposal is make these drawings on site, directly onto existing walls. The wall(s) would require plastering, painting and sanding smooth prior to drawing. Ideally undertaken professionally. Each Ascent takes around 3 days to complete, dependent on time allowed to work on site. Therefore the cost of travel and accommodation would be added to the cost of the work. I am open to negotiate a process that fits with the functioning of the site and to the satisfaction of the client.
