Description
Following on from the Sampled Space, a body of work exhibited at FourCorners Gallery in 2013, the collaborative works with Neil Kenlock explore the resilience of culture and its importance in the resistance to oppressive forces. This work references how architecture and urban planning can be seen to embody ideas and aspects around designing society. The figures express cultural forms and ideas that develop global influence and outgrow and outlast these architectural systems of control and neglect. The gold references the history and context of postcolonial cities. The gold and wealth taken from the colonies via the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and forced labour have established the current states of power. The ‘value’ of gold is transferred back to the people that were dispossessed in the process of building ‘global cities’.
